The Heart Behind “My Coconut Head”

INTRODUCTION

🎙️
“Hello everyone, and welcome to today’s episode. I’m Steve Burgess, also known as Mr. B The Teacher—educator, tutor, lifelong learner, and the proud author of the award-winning children’s book My Coconut Head.

Today, I want to share the story behind this book, what inspired me to write it, what it’s about, what children and families can expect when they read it, how it earned the International Impact Book Award in two categories, and who I want to acknowledge. I’ll also leave you with a meaningful call to action. So, let’s get started.”

WHAT INSPIRED ME TO WRITE MY COCONUT HEAD

🎙️
“The inspiration for My Coconut Head comes directly from my decades of experience working with children—especially those who struggle with attention, behavior, focus, self-regulation, and self-esteem.

I wrote this true but humorous story that took place 5 days after my mother died.  I was on my way home from a job interview, walking around the lake, when I was involved in a “coconut head-butting” incident with 2 ducks.  I am delighted to share my story with you now.

I wanted to create a story that normalizes big thoughts, big feelings, and busy minds—while reminding children that having a ‘coconut head’ doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means your brain is active, curious, and powerful. It just needs understanding, patience, and guidance.”

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT

🎙️
My Coconut Head tells the story of a child who struggles to stay focused, manage emotions, and keep thoughts from bouncing around like coconuts in their head. Through relatable moments, humor, and heart, the story shows how the child learns to better understand themselves—and how supportive adults help them channel their energy in positive ways.

The book emphasizes self-acceptance, emotional awareness, and growth. It sends a clear message: you are not your challenges, and your differences can be strengths.

WHAT READERS CAN EXPECT

🎙️
“When children read My Coconut Head, they can expect to feel seen and understood. This book helps readers:

  • Understand that it’s okay to think differently
  • Learn strategies for managing emotions and focus
  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Develop emotional intelligence
  • Feel empowered rather than ashamed

Parents, educators, and caregivers will appreciate that the book opens the door to meaningful conversations about behavior, learning differences, and emotional regulation—without judgment or stigma.”

WINNING THE INTERNATIONAL IMPACT BOOK AWARD

🎙️
“One of the most humbling moments of my career was when My Coconut Head received the International Impact Book Award in two categories:

  • Children’s Education
  • Children’s Inspirational/Educational

This recognition affirmed what I’ve always believed—that children need stories that educate and uplift. Winning these awards told me that the message of compassion, understanding, and empowerment is not only needed but is impactful on a global level.
